Texan staffer scholarships and Hall of Fame in Fall, either in-person or virtual

The Friends of The Daily Texan annual Hall of of Fame dinner is officially scheduled for Oct. 2, but whether it is held in person or as a virtual event has not yet been decided.

Two items that are definite: scholarships will be awarded to Daily Texan staffers, and a 2020 Daily Texan Hall of Fame class will be announced and honored.

It has been announced that the University of Texas will reopen in the fall, but no word yet regarding social distancing, interactions and large gatherings. The event, which usually attracts about 200 people, is scheduled to be at The Union.

“We will take our lead from the University of Texas, Moody College of Communication and Texas Student Media. They have important decisions to make regarding activity on campus, and those decisions will guide our action,” said John Reetz, president of the Friends of The Daily Texan group.

The Friends board decided to monitor the situation, and decide as soon as practical about whether the event is virtual or in person.

The FOTDT board felt strongly that the Daily Texan Hall of Fame tradition not be skipped a year or paused, leading to the plan to meet virtually if not in person.

This will be the 8th consecutive Hall of Fame event; the group was founded in 2013.

In addition, scholarships for Texan staffers will be a key component of the event.  Six scholarships were awarded last fall.
