Come to the UT Campus a few minutes early and stop by the Friends of The Daily Texan reception and book signing at The University Co-op from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, on your way to our dinner and, with a purchase, receive free parking for the evening at the Co-op Parking Garage (located at 2214 San Antonio St.).

Dotty Griffith (UT BJ ’72) is a bestselling cookbook author, award-winning journalist, television and radio personality. Dotty is adjunct professor of culinary journalism at the University of North Texas. The former Food Editor and Restaurant Critic of The Dallas Morning News is the author of 10 cookbooks including the Texas Holiday Cookbook and Celebrating Barbecue! Soon to be released is The Enchilada Queen Cookbook that she wrote with Houston chef-restaurateur Sylvia Casares (Fall 2016 publication, St. Martin’s Press). Dotty worked on The Daily Texan from1969-1972 in various capacities as legislative reporter, city editor, editorial page editor and general assignments reporter. She lives in Dallas, Texas.
Jan Jarboe Russell (UT BJ ’72) is the author of the New York Times-bestseller, The Train to Crystal City, which tells the story of a secret World War II family internment camp that was located in Crystal City, Texas. From 1942 to 1948, thousands of German, Japanese and Italian immigrants and children, many of them born in America, lived behind barbed wire in the 290-acre camp located in South Texas. Russell’s book won the Collins Award, given by the Texas Institute of Letters, for Best Book of Non-Fiction in 2015. Russell is a contributing editor for Texas Monthly, and has written for the New York Times, the San Antonio Express-News, Slate and other publications. She is the author of Lady Bird: A Biography of Mrs. Johnson and also compiled and edited They Lived to Tell the Tale. Jan worked as a reporter on The Daily Texan from 1970 to 1972, received her BJ degree from UT, and now lives in San Antonio, Texas.
Sarah Barnes (UT BJ ’85), a native Austinite, is author of Meredith & Me: A mother and daughter on a profoundly different journey. This memoir, written as a journalist and mother, shares boundless insight on what happens when a couple receives a devastating diagnosis about their baby and happily-ever-after becomes differently-ever-after. The author’s experiences underscore the poignant challenges of parenting, school policy, having another child and the unexpected humor spilling into everyday life. Barnes won the 2016 Barbara Jordan Media Award for Meredith & Me, an award given by the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities. “Every one of us who has ever dealt with the vast surprises parenthood brings will want to read Meredith & Me.”– Sarah Bird, Dobie Paisano fellow, author of numerous books and contributor to the New York Times and Texas Monthly. Sarah worked for The Daily Texan in 1983 on the sports desk, as a general assignments reporter and as a state reporter.
John Pope (UT BA Math ’70, MA History ’72), of New Orleans, Louisiana, is the author of Getting Off at Elysian Fields: Obituaries from the New Orleans Times-Picayune, a collection of 123 obituaries and mini-biographies he wrote over three decades that mark the deaths of New Orleans society scions, artists, authors, moguls, politicians, doctors, scoundrels and assorted characters. During his half century journalism career, he was a member of theNew Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper team that won two Pulitzer Prizes, a National Headliner Award, and a George Polk Award for coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Pope graduated from UT where he worked on The Daily Texan in the 1960s and minored in journalism for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Because of restrictions, their books will not be for sale at the Texas Union dinner.
We will still have a Silent Auction at the dinner with generous donations (all proceeds will go to support Daily Texan projects) of autographed books from these Daily Texan authors who cannot attend this year’s event though we hope they will join in future book signings with us:
