Daily Texan Editor-in-Chief Laura Hallas and Managing Editor Michelle Zhang have joined the board of Friends of The Daily Texan Inc. Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. is a non-profit organization established to lend support and assistance to The Daily Texan, an institution at the University of Texas at Austin since 1900. Members include alumni of The Texan, plus other supporters of a free and unfettered student media at UT. The board consists of  media professionals and other supporters of The Texan. Photographer/digital pioneer joins Friends board

Stanley Farrar, a long-time photographer and newsroom digital pioneer, has joined the board of directors of Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. After graduation with a philosophy degree from UT Austin, Stanley worked as photographer and photo director for Texas Student Publications. He then went to the Associated Press Washington, D.C. bureau as a picture editor and came back to Austin as director of photography and graphics at the Austin American- Statesman. In 1981, Louis Black started a job in Austin that he thought would last only a year. He helped launch The Austin Chronicle, which became one of the most successful alternative weeklies in the country. Black recently announced that he is stepping down from his job of 36 years. Texas Monthly Food Editor Patricia Sharpe has worked at the magazine since 1974, when she started out editing the cultural and restaurant listings. She eventually focused exclusively on food, and her writing has won numerous awards, including a James Beard Foundation award for magazine food writing for her story “Confessions of a Skinny Bitch,” about her career as a restaurant critic. Her humorous story “War Fare,” an account of living for 48 hours on military MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), was included in the anthology Best Food Writing 2002. Friends of The Daily Texan. will induct 11 new Daily Texan Hall of Fame members and host University of Texas System Chancellor William McRaven as keynote speaker at its fifth annual gathering Nov. 3 at The Texas Union.
