The nine honorees of the 2016 Friends of The Daily Texan Awards come from all journalistic fields and endeavors, and include a glass ceiling-breaking top female editor, a photojournalist who led photo departments at 6 major metro newspapers and won Two Pulitzer prizes, a beloved reporter-turned-professor who left a lasting impression on all he met and a journalist-turned State Senator who is known for her legislative, public service and professional accomplishments. Texan supporters, save the date: Sept. 16

The fourth annual awards event and gathering of Friends of The Daily Texan has been scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16. Friends of The Daily Texan is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the 2016 Friends of The Daily Texan Awards. These awards recognize Daily Texan alumni and supporters who have led distinguished careers, as well as other individuals who have demonstrated support for The Texan. Bernhardt named Dean of Moody College of Communication

Jay Bernhardt has been appointed dean of the Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin. He has served as interim dean of the college since Sept. 1, 2015. The appointment became effective March 1. “Jay has an ambitious vision for the future of Moody and in the last six months has demonstrated himself to be a champion for excellence in the college,” said UT Austin President Gregory L. Singer, Sargent inducted into Texas Newspaper Hall of Fame

SAN MARCOS — Former Daily Texan cartoonist  Ben Sargent and retired journalism professor Griff Singer were inducted into the Texas Newspaper Foundation Hall of Fame during the recent Texas Press 2016 Midwinter Conference and Trade Show.  They joined Gail Borden and Caro Brown as 2016 inductees. Austin-based Texas Newspaper Foundation created the hall of fame in 2006 to induct annually up to four individuals credited with outstanding achievements and contributions to the newspaper industry and to their communities. UT’s Sargent, Singer named to Texas Newspaper Hall of Fame

AUSTIN — Texas Newspaper Foundation proudly announces the selection of four exemplary individuals — Gail Borden, Caro Brown, Ben Sargent and Griff Singer — to be inducted into the Texas Newspaper Foundation Hall of Fame for the year 2016.
