Former Texan Staffer Bridges Named Executive Editor of American-Statesman

From the Austin American-Statesman American-Statesman Publisher Patrick Dorsey has announced two leadership changes for the Statesman newsroom. John Bridges, a 30-year veteran of the Statesman newsroom and former staffer of The Daily Texan at the University of Texas, was promoted from managing editor to executive editor, and Bill Church, the senior vice president for news for Statesman owner GateHouse Media, added Statesman editor-in-chief to his corporate responsibilities. “Together, with Bill and John, we will build on our impressive legacy of doing journalism with impact,” Dorsey said in a staff announcement. “I look forward to all the amazing things we can […]

Journalism Foyer at Belo Center for New Media Dedicated to Griff and Evelyn Singer

University of Texas Journalism school legend Griff Singer and his wife Evelyn have been honored with dedication of the journalism foyer in the Belo Center for New Media in recognition of their achievements. Singer was a long-time professor in the journalism school, and also had a distinguished career at the Dallas Morning News and other papers. His wife Evelyn was a long distance runner and former teacher; she died in 2018 after a 14-year battle with cancer. Former UT President Bill Powers, who supported The Texan during tough financial time, dies

William C. Powers Jr., 28th president of the The University of Texas at Austin, and an esteemed teacher, nationally recognized legal scholar and staunch believer in the value of the public research university who defended UT against challenges to its mission, died Sunday. Powers passed away in Austin from complications from a fall several months earlier and from oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, a rare adult-onset muscle disorder. Becky and Jerry Conn, who met as staffers at The Texan, establish scholarship for Texan staffers

An Austin couple who met 59 years ago as staffers on The Daily Texan, student newspaper at The University of Texas at Austin, has established an annual cash award for present day staffers.  With their gift to The University, the couple established the Jerry and Becky Conn Daily Texan Scholarship Fund to be awarded annually in perpetuity. The generous gift will generate a $1,500 cash award for a deserving Texan staffer. The award will be announced each fall at the Friends of the Texan annual event. Friends group defines fund-raising goals for Texan needs in 2019

The board of directors of Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. has established a set of fund-raising goals for 2019 to benefit The Daily Texan, and is encouraging donations as 2018 comes to a close. Donations are now being accepted for each of the four goals, plus any other directed needs identified by a donor and the Friends group. Former Daily Texan Photographer Shoots Recent TIME Cover

Former Daily Texan photographer John Moore shot one of the two images on a recent TIME magazine cover.  Moore’s photo of a young Honduran girl along the Texas-Mexico border was paired in a photo illustration with a photo of President Donald Trump. Moore was also featured on the CBS Evening News in a story behind the story that tells how he came to take the photo. Former NYT editor to serve as new UT Journalism School Director

McElroy has 30 years of experience working as a professional journalist.
