Jaree Campbell, a Daily Texan staffer for the past two years, has been selected as
the first recipient of a $1,500 scholarship grant from the Friends of The Daily
Texan, Inc.
Jaree began as a copy editor, then became associate copy desk chief, and then
associate editor for the opinion department.
“My role as a copy editor served as my initial foray into journalism where I
learned the basics of copy editing and the workflow of a newsroom,”
she said in her application.
“As associate editor I had the opportunity to influence the editorial vision of the
department…Ultimately I have learned that you get as much out of The Texan as
you put in.”
The Friends group has set up an endowment to fund the award at a
current level of $1,500 per year for an outstanding Daily Texan staffer.
