Supporters of student journalism at the University of Texas and fans and friends of The Daily Texan, please mark March 31 on your calendar. That’s the date of the annual Friends of The Daily Texan gathering on the Austin campus, and this year it will be a bit different. Friends of The Daily Texan sets $300,000 goal to fund scholarships for Texan staffers

Three new members join Friends of Daily Texan board

Three new members have been elected to the Board of Directors of Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. The Friends of The Texan is a non-profit organization founded 9 years ago that supports The Daily Texan, student newspaper at the University of Texas at Austin, by providing scholarships to student journalists and assisting when there are other needs. In addition the group has financially supported creation of a digital archive of all copies of The Texan, plus funding video and camera equipment, projects and other needs of student journalists. Friends of The Daily Texan create Griff Singer Scholarship for Texan staffer

S. Griffin Singer, respected Texas journalist and beloved former UT journalism professor, has been honored with an annual scholarship to be awarded in his name to a staff member of The Daily Texan. The $2,000 annual grant will come from Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc., a non-profit established in 2013 to provide support for The Daily Texan and its staff. The addition of this scholarship brings the total awarded to 11 Texan staffers to $15,000 from the Friends group and its partner donors. Former Texan staffer Valentino-DeVries wins Pulitzer for National Reporting at The New York Times

Jennifer Valentino-DeVries, a a Daily Texan staffer and Managing Editor in 2000, is part of The New York Times team that won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. The Times’ project was described by the judges: “For an ambitious project that quantified a disturbing pattern of fatal traffic stops by police, illustrating how hundreds of deaths could have been avoided and how officers typically avoided punishment.” Overall, The New York Times won three Pulitzer Prizes this year and was named as a finalist five more times when awards were announced on May 9. Friends of Texan fund key part of Daily Texan’s digital efforts

For the second year in a row, the Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. will fund a key part of the digital infrastructure of  the student newspaper at the University of Texas. The board of directors of the Friends group recently voted to fully fund for a 12-month period the cost of infrastructure and web tools for the student newspaper’s website, thedailytexan.com.
