McConnico-Bouju Scholarships celebrate a friendship made at The Daily Texan

Two annual scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded to University of Texas at Austin students who are on the staff of The Daily Texan newspaper. The scholarships are being made possible by award-winning photojournalists John McConnico of Texas and Jean-Marc Bouju of France, both former Daily Texan staffers. The first recipients will be announced on October 4, 2019 at The Friends of The Daily Texan annual Hall of Fame dinner. Editor’s Note – The Longhorn Alumni Band – 300 strong with 230 additional along for support – was one of the lead groups marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day Anniversary June 6. Friends and supporters of The Daily Texan, student newspaper at the University of Texas-Austin, will gather Oct. 4 for the annual Hall of Fame dinner, sponsored by Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. In addition to honoring new inductees into The Daily Texan Hall of Fame, scholarship grants will be awarded to Daily Texan staffers. The FOTDT in 2018 established an endowment for annual scholarships, and presented awards to three students last year. A total of at least 4 scholarships will be announced at the 2019 dinner. Journalism Foyer at Belo Center for New Media Dedicated to Griff and Evelyn Singer

University of Texas Journalism school legend Griff Singer and his wife Evelyn have been honored with dedication of the journalism foyer in the Belo Center for New Media in recognition of their achievements. Singer was a long-time professor in the journalism school, and also had a distinguished career at the Dallas Morning News and other papers. His wife Evelyn was a long distance runner and former teacher; she died in 2018 after a 14-year battle with cancer. Friends group defines fund-raising goals for Texan needs in 2019

The board of directors of Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. has established a set of fund-raising goals for 2019 to benefit The Daily Texan, and is encouraging donations as 2018 comes to a close. Donations are now being accepted for each of the four goals, plus any other directed needs identified by a donor and the Friends group. 11 former staffers honored, Texan journalist scholarship established by Friends of The Texan

Eleven former staffers of The Daily Texan were honored and a new, endowed scholarship for a Texan staffer was announced at the recent annual awards dinner of Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. on the University of Texas-Austin campus.
