Grants for Texan staffers to honor 2 former UT Journalism photo professors

Two annual awards for Daily Texan staff members have been created in honor of journalism professors at the University of Texas at Austin. The Faculty Recognition Award is a cash award designed to honor the extraordinary efforts of outstanding faculty, and the awards go to Texan staffers who have made significant contributions working for The Daily Texan in spite of financial hardship. Two recent alums of The Daily Texan will be honored as Rising Stars at the March 22 Friends of the Daily Texan Hall of Fame gathering on the UT campus. The Rising Star Award, which is given to recent graduates who have already made a significant contribution in their field, will be given to Ellie Breed, Chief Press Officer at the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and Eleanor Dearman, a Texas politics and government reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Scholarship to honor A.R. ‘Dick’ Elam

The Friends of The Daily Texan is creating a scholarship to honor the memory of A.R. “Dick” Elam, who passed away in 2023 after a long career in journalism and journalism education. Elam served as editor of The Daily Texan, was a small-town newspaper owner in Texas, and taught journalism at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the inaugural class of The Daily Texan Hall of Fame. The initial goal for the Elam Scholarship Fund is an endowment of $75,000. A total of $37,500 has already […]

John Anders Died Oct. 16, 2023 Dallas, Texas From The Dallas Morning News John Anders, whose lyrical writing, eclectic tastes and vast knowledge of Texas and his own distinct passions guided his career at The Dallas Morning News for 32 years, more than 20 of which he spent as one of the paper’s leading columnists, died Oct. 16, 2023. Veteran Austin columnist and sports editor Kirk Bohls and wife fund annual scholarship for Daily Texan sports journalist

Veteran Austin American-Statesman columnist and sports editor Kirk Bohls and his wife Vicki have endowed a permanent grant to fund an annual scholarship for a Daily Texan sports journalist. Kirk and Vicki’s $50,000 donation will fully endow a new annual scholarship, and comes as the Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. work this year to raise funds to fund for long-term availability all 13 grants that will be awarded next year. Celebration of Life service set for Bill Little on Oct. 1 at LBJ Library

A Celebration of Life service for legendary Longhorn Athletics administrator Bill Little, who passed away Aug. 25, is set for Sunday, October 1, at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium in the LBJ Library (2405 Robert Dedman Drive, Austin, TX 78712) on The University of Texas campus. From The Drag Audio Production House The Drag Audio Production House at the University of Texas at Austin has released  its newest podcast, ‘Lady Bird,’ which explores the life and legacy of one of Texas’ most iconic figures. The ‘Lady Bird’ podcast has been years in the making. The project first began in 2021 with the support of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation and Lady Bird Johnson’s family.
